Thyg, the Giftsnatch

All of you are doing a great job retrieving the stolen presents from the Greevils but there is something that needs your attention.

While all the Greevils did get away with presents, one particular creature by the name of “Thyg, the Giftsnatch” got a much better deal. It is unclear what he stole but he definitely got the finer share compared to his counterparts. The Giftsnatch is constantly on the move but you may be able to intercept him and take some of that shiny loot for yourself.

When you are playing a Greeviling mode match, there is a random chance for you to spot Thyg trying to cross the frozen river. The game will notify you when he spawns but you will need to hurry up because he will not linger around forever. Battling on the slippery surface of the river, slay Thyg and retrieve what he stole before he skates away across the borders. He will have 10,000 HP so it is crucial that you team up with your enemy for this little cause.

Upon slaying Thyg, every member of the game will get a second drop which could be anything – ranging from a Nice Frostivus Gift or the much wanted Immortal Golden Greevil.

Either way, it is still one greevil less so I guess that is a good thing. Enjoy Greevil Hunting!

Guide: Greeviling Mode

The Christmas update for Dota 2 is here and the Greevils have plundered the stores and made off with the presents and goodies. It is upon you to slay those vile Greevils and get your presents back.

You can sign up for a Greeviling Match via the Play Tab where you will have the choice to equip one of your existing Greevils from the Halloween Diretide event. The type of your Greevil will determine what spells you will carry forward into the game. Do not worry if you were not a part of Diretide, anyone without an egg will automatically be assigned the default Naked Greevil form.

Find Match

Once you are in the game and you pick a hero, you can find a sock in your inventory which you will need to open. There are some goodies for you in this sock that will aid you in the game. While the secondary contents of the sock may vary, you will at all times be given a Whistle using which you will be able to transform in to a Greevil with special abilities. The whistle requires channeling and can be used unlimited number of times in a game to switch to and fro between your hero and your Greevil.

Whistle

Once the game begins, set out to the marked Greevil camps and take them out before your enemy team does. When you slay one of these camps, you will be awarded a point and also presents that will give you boosts to your inventory by filling it up with random items in the game that will help your hero grow stronger.

Major Greevil Spawn

The aim of the game is to finish 11 Camps before your enemy does. While everybody wins a present, the team which wins get the better Frostivus Gift that all in all offers a better drop rate for nice items while the losing team will have to make do with those gifts that even the Greevils did not like much.

Victory

Frostivus Gift

As simple as that. So what are you waiting for? Go ahead, slay those dirty Greevils and retrieve the presents already. Merry Greeviling!

Pocket Dota 2: Diary #1

Just yesterday morning there was nothing called Pocket Dota 2 and all of a sudden we seem to have a pretty big project on our hands.

I was just sitting there going through some stuff when Nick (LostENT) messaged me on Facebook telling me that he had a free weekend and that he wanted to work on some tiny application for the iOS that had something to do with Dota 2. We got started on what he could do and the conversation went on and on about how much could be done in a application if worked on properly. I do not remember how we got to point but I decided to make a mock draft for him so he could have something to go by when he began working on it.

Home ScreenI got down to making something in Photoshop and ended up with what you see on the right hand side. I showed it to Nick and he loved the concept and this is where I decided to take things a step further. While it was just a preview, I posted the image up to the lovely Reddit community to find out what they thought of it and ways in which we could improve. As always, the community did not disappoint.

They seemed to have loved the idea just as much as we did and started filling us with their ideas, suggestions and requests. When you get such support, you only get more pumped up to pull the project ahead and I started designing other elements of the application. We ended up with quite a few. You can take a look at them after the break.

But designing concepts and ideas was one thing but able to recreate the same in the form of a working application was an entirely different story. The UI elements of our design were very different from the traditional elements provided for usage by Apple so I was not really sure if we could pull off the same in the app itself. But Nick got down to it immediately and what we managed to achieve on the very first day is just brilliant in my own personal opinion.

It’s just been slightly over 24 hours since we started designing the app and we already have an alpha build of it. The best part being – the app works EXACTLY like previewed in the mocks. At the moment we have a fully working Home Screen and Hero List. The application is optimized for the new iPhone 5 and also older versions such as the iPhone 4. We are planning on getting started with the hero profiles and content pages tomorrow and hope to get them done as soon as possible. We will be working on one section after the other and I will post up threads for anyone interested to pour in their suggestions and feedback which is so appreciated.

We are currently working only on an iOS version but the request for an Android version has been insanely high. Quite a few Android developers have actually contacted me already  volunteering to port the same idea on the Android. I haven’t responded to them yet but I will get back to them and see if we can get things going for that platform too. But before I actually do that, I want to get some more design elements in place so we have a good base to work on.

Once we have a good amount of content set up and some more features running, we’ll put out a testing period for anyone who is willing to help us test the application. We will be able to not only get rid of the bugs but also have some user input on what the application should provide.

You can always leave any comments and suggestions on my Facebook page. Here ends my first blog entry hoping for a good finish on this app.

steam-community-market

The Community Market is an addition to the Steam Trading system where users will be able to sell their items for Steam Wallet money which they then can use to purchase other content available on Steam.

The market will allow users to easily search items that are up for sale and aid sellers in delivering their products much better. With this initial launch of the system, the market is limited to one-time consumable items until the process is refined further. All activity on the market will be subjected to transaction fees. You can read all about it here and more on the related FAQ here.

You can also give feedback about the system via the official group on Steam.

Guide: Diretide Mode

With the Halloween update from earlier today, you now have access to the special event mode called the ‘Diretide‘ that allows you to be a part of a brand new Dota experience for this festive period.

You can sign up to a match on Diretide just like any other ordinary game from the Play Tab. Once you have signed up, you will be matched up and placed into the game.

The primary objective of the game is to bring down the big and bad candy loving Roshan at the end but the game kicks off with you having to collect the Greevil Taffy’s from the Confectioners of Yhauron and taking them to your basket which is located at your respective Ancient Creeps pit.

Greevil Taffy‘s are basically candies that drop in the game from Roshlings that spawn along with the mobs, by killing enemy heroes, neutral creeps (after the 10 minute marker) or by just bashing at the enemies Candy Basket. Once you have these candies, all you need to do is to take them to your basket and deposit them there. Sounds simple eh? But here’s the hitch. Carrying each candy comes with a penalty. Every candy you carry lowers your HP by 7.5% and also increase your teleportation times. So be very careful as to how many you carry or you can risk getting one shotted by your enemy. You will drop your candies if you die.

Why should you collect candies? For two very important reasons. The first being that the more the candies in your basket, the more map gold and XP your team gains allowing them to farm up items required for the big boss fight that awaits them at the end of the road. Candies are also require to feed Roshan when he comes along (explained below) which helps you fend him off but adding to this sugar rush. Secondly, having collected more candies may have a special prize waiting in the form of a reward.

Now with the candies explained, time to get on and talk about Roshan – yes, that crazy candy lover.

While you are busy collecting candies, Roshan is dormant for the first ten minutes. His restraint dies after that time and he enters the map looking for his share of candies. Now with you showing so much interest in the candies, he will come after you and ask you for some. You will need to give a candy to Roshan to fend him off or you can sit there and take his thrashing. Either way you prefer it. Remember the feeding Roshan will send him away and help you concentrate on gathering candies but it will add to his sugar rush which you will have to deal with later.

The targets being chased by Roshan will show up in between the candy counter as depicted below.

Roshan alternates between both the teams for candies for the next ten minutes. He is invulnerable during this period and will only move around eating the candies that you give him.

At the 20 minute marker, Roshan’s love for sugar gets the better of him and he will rush to one of the forests (depending on which team is leading on the candies) and wait for you to bring him down there. The locations are marked on the map below. You can teleport to these locations.

The Roshan you face here is no ordinary Roshan that you meet daily in your games of Dota. With his enchantments broken, he is a tad bit crazier. Ok, who am I kidding, he’s just mental so you’ll need to join forces with your enemy here.

This Roshan comes with a lot of abilities such as heavy nuke arsenal of sunstrikes, massive AOE deafening blasts and many more. Be sure to buy all the inventory you may need before going to face him because he is waiting with 150,000 HP and 5,000 MP that regenerates pretty rapidly.

Once you have managed to bring him down, you will all be rewarded for your valiant efforts in the art of war pretty handsomely.

Everyone in the game will walk away with a little token but the lucky ones may even stumble on some eggs that I will talk about later. :) If you are quick enough to kill the beast, you may even get into the Sugar Rush Hall of Fame for everyone to witness your amazing feat.

Have fun in the Diretide mode.
